VERNERI POHJOLA QUARTET

The most humane-sounding trumpet player, one of the most creative and original jazz
musicians in Europe, and his quartet will open Hamina Tattoo’s Bastion Jazz concert
series. Verneri Pohjola has attained several acclaimed jazz prizes in Finland, and he is
backed by a stack of successful albums that have received five stars all over Europe.

NINA MYA

Singer and composer Nina Mya is a true bridge-builder between the American jazz
tradition of the 1950s and 1960s, African American gospel and modern jazz singing. Her
beautiful and pliant, acrobatic voice leaves no one cold. Her compositions have always
been there, they are classics from the moment of their conception.

SEVERI PYYSALO JA JUKKIS UOTILA

A compilation of the best results of the comprehensive compositions of Severi Pyysalo and
Jukkis Uotila over the past 40 years or so has been put together for this evening. “I’m sure
there will also be some jazz standards,” says Severi. Great energy and intensity are surely
the best words to describe the whole gig. The rising star bassist Filemon von Numers will
also make his debut in Hamina in this line-up of champions.

MAJA MANNILA TRIO

The young singer-pianist-composer Maja Mannila, who has already gained international
fame, is coming with her band to speed up our shift-over to the weekend. Her
compositions are an elegant mix of rhythm and blues, soul, jazz and gospel. There is a
guaranteed musical delight in store for you!

OLLI SOIKKELI TRIO

Olli Soikkeli, who lives in New York and originally comes from North Karelia, has become
one of the most respected gypsy jazz guitarists in the world. He will arrive in Hamina with
Grammy-winning pianist Marian Petrescu and bassist Teemu Åkerblom. In-depth
interpretations and virtuosic speed come together in this show.
