Hamina – charming fortress town from the 17th century

Hamina is renowned as a historic military town. It was originally built as a fortress town in 1653 to protect the Swedish border against the east. In the turmoil of several wars, Hamina was alternately a part of Sweden and Russia. Accordingly, the fortress was strenghtened in turns to protect against an enemy coming from the west and from the east.

Military traditions lived on at the Cadet School in the 19th century and at the Reserve Officer School in the 20th century, with the latter still providing instruction for Finnish reserve officers. The circular town plan of Hamina, the idyllic old buildings and the star-shapedfortress are reminders of Hamina´s military past. The streets of Hamina are full of atmosphere. The buildings and bulwarks have beenrenovated skilfully, cherising the legacy of Hamina.

Hamina is also a seaside town. The busy export port and enterprises which serve exports together with the location of Hamina close to the border between the EU and Russia give their characteristic traits to Hamina.

The easiest way to explore the star-shaped fortifications and the centre of Hamina with its idyllic old wooden houses is to wander around on foot. Drop in at one of the many churches and museums or search for a bargain at the market, the fairs or boutiques. If, while on holiday, you fancy a little more action, then join in one of the many events held during the course of the year. The region just beyond the historical centre – Tervasaari, the surrounding countryside, the sea and the fishing villages in the beautiful archipelago – are also well worth a visit.

Catch the modern beat of present-day Hamina and the memorable tales of yesteryear. Let Hamina charm you!
